Confirm that a trap fits
- Use a camera or repeated direct sightings to confirm the cat's location.
- Get permission from the property owner.
- Choose a level, sheltered place away from traffic and loose dogs.
- Make sure you can monitor continuously and move the trapped cat at once.
Use the right equipment
Use a sturdy live-animal box trap sized for a cat. Test the trigger, door, and every latch before baiting. Line the bottom with flat newspaper or a thin towel only if it cannot interfere with the mechanism. Have a large breathable cover ready.
Build a predictable feeding pattern
If conditions allow, feed in the same place at the same time while watching with a camera. Some experienced trappers secure the trap door open during conditioning. Do not improvise modifications that could fail or injure an animal.
Monitor every minute it is active
Watch from nearby or use a reliable live camera while remaining close enough to respond immediately. Check local rules and weather. Do not leave a set trap unattended overnight. Once it closes, cover it promptly and move it to a quiet, temperature-controlled place.
Plan for the wrong animal
Wildlife or another cat may enter first. Keep the trap covered, stay calm, and follow local animal-control guidance for safe release. Never put hands through the wire. If an animal appears injured or distressed, call a veterinarian or animal services.
